Research File # 06 William H Selah, 6th West Virginia Cavalry Co I `
Inscription: "Wm H Selah / Co I 3 Reg Va Infantry "
Location: From SE corner go north 87 inches, up 54 inches (Picture good)
The 6th Regiment West Virginia Cavalry was organized from the 3rd West Virginia Mounted Infantry January 26, 1864. The 3rd Regiment West Virginia Infantry operated broadly in the Shenandoah Valley in 1862 and 1863. Closest is Martinsburg July 18 & 19, 1863 which could suggest this is yet another of the post Gettysburg prisonerss. This soldier enlisted August 5, 1861 and mustered out August 17, 1864. There are no indicated absences on his muster cards so why was this guy in Winchester. It really seems like the right guy because the inscription on the wall bearing 3rd Virginia is confirmed on his muster cards. All of the 1863 muster cards indicate he was present. Notation on card indicates "Aug & Sep 1863 Provost Guard (Co I 3 Va Inf)" He may have simply taken up quarters in the courthouse during the Federal occupation of Winchester during that period.
Another lead, muster card contains notation "Name appears also as W H Selagh" Need to follow this lead.
