File 16         Lt. Col. Charles Farnsworth, 1st Connecticut Cavalry, Co B, 

Inscription: Grouping of names of Gettysburg officers captured in the July 1863 pursuit of Lee. 
This is second line: "Maj Farnsworth 1st Connecticut Cav Captured near Halltown July 14"

Location: From SE corner go north 147 inches, up 36 inches

This unit was in the vicinity of Harpers Ferry from July 5 till January 1864. Halltown is about 2 miles from Harpers Ferry. The 1st Connecticut Cavalry was held in reserve at Camp Cheesbrough with Captain Charles Farnsworth in command in a report dated July 10, 1863. On a report dated July 13, the new commander, Captain Erastus Blakeslee is shown. In a report dated July 18, 1863 by Captain Blakeslee, the fighting at Harpers Ferry on July 14th was described as hand to hand with both sides taking casualties. "The enemy also charged, and it became a fierce hand to hand fight, in which owing to the disparity of our numbers, they repulsed us, rescued several prisoners whom we had previously taken and I am sorry to add, captured Major Farnsworth and 24 men."

Civil War Data base confirms capture 7/14/63 Bolivar Heights WV, later paroled Promoted Lt Col 1/20/64. Died 4/15/67

PICTURE!!!!!!! Thanks to Bob Angelovich Historian 1st Connecticut Volunteers, we now have a quality picture of Mr. Farnsworth. In addition there is a full article on him published in the magazine "Military Images" Volume XII Number 2 September – Oct 1990 in which this same picture is published along with an account of his capture and subsequent poor treatment in Confederate prisons!! We hit the jackpot on this one!
