Research File 17             Captain Robert Schofield, 1st Vermont Cavalry

Inscription: Grouping of names of Gettysburg officers captured in the July 1863 pursuit of Lee. 
This is third line:    "Capt Scofield 1st Vermont captured near Hagerstown July 12"

Location: From SE corner go north 147 inches, up 36 inches

The 1st Vermont Cavalry was in Hagerstown July 11 through July 13. A report dated October 24, 1863 prepared by Col. Edward Sawyer, then commander of the 1st Vermont Cavalry reported that his force had advanced and occupied Hagerstown on July 12, 1863. The report states that on July 13, his unit encountered a strong enemy picket, "Captain Scofield (sic) led the charge. …. Led by Captain Scofield and Lieutenant Newton the boys absolutely "pitched in" to this charge. … In the charge Captain Scofield was wounded and taken prisoner"
