Research File 31: 1st Lt. Samuel Baker 35th Battalion Virginia Cavalry, Adjutant
Inscription on sword "Emerson Silver 1861 Trenton NJ"
Location: This is a model 1840 New Jersey NCO sword showing substantial wear, hardly the equipment for a proud Virginia officer. By 1864 the Confederacy was desperate for equipment of all kinds. Presumably Mr Baker either lost his sword, or broke it and picked this one up off the field.
The 35th Virginia Cavalry was commanded by Col. Lige V White and was referred to as the "Laurel Brigade. Captain Baker was from Greenwood Virginia, and has many descendents in Frederick County Virginia. His actions in Battle of Brandy Station are described in the regimental history.
Military Record: Yes but it is sparse, need to check at Virginia archives
Pension Record: None found
