Research File 36:         John M Warner ????????

Inscription: "John M Warner / Gettysburg / Adams County Pa"
Note the "Adams County" is quite clear but is different handwriting and off to the side of the inscription. I am not certain it is really associated with Warner

Location: From SE Corner north 190 inches, up 48 inches. (Picture good)

Best candidate: John Warner, 18th PA Cav Co E Civil War data base reports that he deserted July 15/1863. Unit was at Gettysburg on July 3, then the chase. They were at Hagerstown on July15, the same day other prisoners were bagged. It is possible that he was reported as deserted when in fact he was captured. Since he had been in Battle of Gettysburg, that might explain the listing of "Gettysburg" Need to follow this lead

Other possibilities:

John Warner , enlisted 5/23/62 as private New Orleans, Co E 13th Ct Infantry, wounded 9/19/64 at Winchester died 11/4/64 This is Third Winchester. Here we have a Federal wounded. Were the Federal wounded taken to the courthouse? It is doubtful, I think they used Shawnee Springs. The courthouse would have been extremely crowded with Confederate prisoners which numbered over 1,500.

John W Warner, Co M 1st Rhode Island Cavalry
POW 6/18/63 Middleburg Va (We have this Military record which confirms capture. Does not really seem like this is the right guy as his capture is before Gettysburg and although he was probably brought to the courthouse, the inscription "Gettysburg" makes no sense for this soldier.

This is common name. If the "Adams County, PA" is not part of this inscription then this name could be from any state in which there is an even longer list of candidates.
