Research File 44:   George W Mobbs 1st Maryland Infantry Co D

Inscription: "George W Washington / George W Mobbs / Baltimore MD

(Both names are same handwriting and this is along side the other 1st Maryland name)

Location: top of the stairs on the left wall near the floor (Picture???

George W Mobbs was recruited into 1st Maryland out of Baltimore. He is shown as "Missing" in his May / June 1862 muster record. By his name on the wall, it would appear that he was in fact part of the group of Marylanders captured at Front Royal on May23, 1862. The absence of a capture record may be poor record keeping, as it is clear now that these cards and capture records were prepared after the fact and from incomplete records. This soldier deserted in 1861, then returned to the unit. His official record seems to indicate a second desertion in 1862 as indicated. Then in 1864 he deserted a third time and was dishonorably discharged, drummed out of the unit!

Military Record: Yes, confirms his official status as missing May 1862

Pension Record: None (deserter will not be eligible for pension)
