Court House |
Help us research our soldiers!

The court house was the most important public building in Winchester during the Civil War and was a natural spot to treat the wounded and to hold prisoners. Many of the prisoners wrote their names on the walls of the courthouse. Below is a listing of our research in progress. If you are a descendent of any of these soldiers or have any information whatsoever about these soldiers we would love to hear from you:

There are many gaps in this research. Volunteers are needed to add to the research. For example there are extensive files in Virginia state archives dealing with the Confederate prisons, and regimental histories abound in accounts of these engagements and activities of these people. Research is needed to compile lists of prisoners captured at Winchester, from the regimental side, this will likely lead to more matches. In addition, it would be interesting to trace the activities of these individuals later in life. And there are many inscriptions that we simply cannot figure out. So if you are inspired to add to this research in any way, we welcome your efforts.
